About Marvel Characters
Since the Marvel universe was acquired by Disney, the company has been opening its doors to release movies that include or even center on some of the lesser known heroes and villains in their intellectual property. Examples include Ant Man, the Black Panther, and, as part of the Infinity War film the villain Thanos. Despite the expansion from the likes of the Spiderman and X-men films that were traditionally released, Marvel is now creating films on a wider range of their characters which is leading to a richer universe. Despite this recent expansion, the well is by no means dry, and there are many other characters choose from. Here are some of the more likely suspects for future films.
Mutants Galore
X-Men films have been well received by the viewing audience and it may be time for Marvel to start launching films of the other mutant teams in their vault. This includes X-Factor and X-force, each of which have interesting character arches that viewers would enjoy if they are translated to the big screen. While neither of these mutant teams have the same brand recognition as X-Men does, each would translate well to the big screen and help to layer in more depth and complexity to the Marvel Universe.
Period Focuses
If Disney and Marvel believe that focusing on relatively unknown characters may lead to diminishing numbers at the box office, they may choose to focus on specific periods of time in their main characters’ history. Most comic book films focus on the origin story for their heroes and don’t truly explore the rest of their history. Characters like Spiderman have rich histories and time periods after their origin and films can be set in specific time periods, such as the period in which Spiderman was dating Gwen Stacy instead of Mary Jane Watson. Characters have lives and meet challenges and focusing on a more robust view of their rich histories can be an area for expansion.
